Ask for help

Ask someone to repeat, slow down, or help.

천천히 말해 주세요.

Please speak slowly.

cheon-cheon-hi mal-hae ju-se-yo

다시 말해 주세요.

Please say it again.

da-si mal-hae ju-se-yo

잘 모르겠어요.

I do not quite understand.

jal mo-reu-ge-sseo-yo

도와주세요.

Please help me.

do-wa-ju-se-yo

You can say you do not understand; asking again is part of learning.

Your ears need a slower speed

A clerk explains a form at full speed. You catch the first word, then everything sounds like a fast train. Ask them to slow down, and ask for the important part again.

Nodding does not have to mean you understood. Say you are not sure before moving on. Adding the apology below can gently open a request; you do not need to apologize over and over for learning.

Ask a partner to say a sentence quickly. Request a slower repeat, then repeat the part you understood.

죄송하지만, 다시 말해 주세요.

Sorry, could you say that again?

jwe-song-ha-ji-man, da-si mal-hae ju-se-yo

Everyday polite · A gentle way to interrupt when you missed something. Follow it with the part you want repeated, if you can.

Making plans

Choose a day, confirm a time, and explain a delay.

언제 만날까요?

When shall we meet?

eon-je man-nal-kka-yo

내일 오후 두 시에 만나요.

Let us meet tomorrow at two in the afternoon.

nae-il o-hu du si-e man-na-yo

예약하고 싶어요.

I would like to make a reservation.

ye-ya-ka-go si-peo-yo

조금 늦을 것 같아요.

I think I will be a little late.

jo-geum neu-jeul kkeot kka-ta-yo

Confirm the date and time together to avoid misunderstandings.

Two o’clock, but which two?

You agree to meet at two. One person imagines lunch; another checks whether it means the middle of the night. Saying tomorrow and afternoon saves a very sleepy misunderstanding!

State the date and morning or afternoon together. A reservation request starts a conversation; it does not mean the booking is confirmed. If you will be late, give notice and a realistic arrival estimate.

Arrange a meeting for tomorrow afternoon. Then imagine a delay and use the ten-minute example below only if that estimate is true.

십 분 정도 늦을 것 같아요.

I think I will be about ten minutes late.

sip ppun jeong-do neu-jeul kkeot kka-ta-yo

A useful follow-up · Use your real estimate instead of ten minutes when needed. It helps the other person decide whether to wait.
